Building A Deck without Driving The Contractor Nuts

Posted by admin | Building | Sunday 23 September 2007 4:00 am

By ApartmentsForRentNews.com – Houses and Apartment Living

Tips! Ask about service locations around the apartment or your house to rent. Find out things such as, how far it is to the supermarket, the gas station, the bank, restaurants, and public transportation.

Before you can begin building a deck, you have see if you need any building permits. If you find that you need some, file the proper papers. If there is a wait, this is the perfect time to start pla        nning how big you want your deck, and what you want it to do. Some decks are simple and serve a simple purpose, while others may wrap around a pool, and are home to your outdoor barbeque area. Decks can be as big or as little as you like, as well as made from a number of different types of woods and stains.

Tips! Ask about children and pets. Some apartments for rent may not allow children.

There are software programs that can help you with building a deck. These will help you plan and layout what you want, as well as give you an estimate of what you will need when you build. If you have a good estimate, you are less likely to buy too much when you go to get lumber for the deck. This software may also give you some examples from which you can choose, and will tell you if the deck will be sound or not.

Tips! Visit the apartment and house surrounding. Too many people sign on the dotted line without ever actually seeing the neighborhood.

If you aren’t good with planning, there are pre-made plans you can use for building a deck. These range from basic designs to complex and multi-leveled layouts. There are many sites with these layouts for sale, and some offer them for free. You can look through pictures and decide what you like, and order the one you want to use. You may even find that your local home improvement store, or lumber provider may also have deck plans you can look through for your use.

For something truly original, you can hire a contractor to build something that will go perfectly with your home. When you hire a contractor for building a deck, you can get exactly what you want, and even make changes as you go. Just don’t ago crazy with the changes or you might drive the contractor nuts. Having a good solid plan before you begin building a deck will help avoid this type of situation.

Tips! Find out how much the rent is, and all the financial details therein. This is very important for comparing apartments and house renting.

Many homeowners are constantly on a quest to better their living space. This may mean redecorating, painting, getting a new roof, adding living space, or getting new furniture. Some people like to spruce up the outside with landscaping, a garden, or by building a deck. If you choose to build a deck, you can add a lasting beauty to the exterior of your home, as well as a great space for friends and family to gather.

The Right Greenhouse Heaters For Your Home

Posted by admin | Greenhouse | Tuesday 27 March 2007 3:07 pm

By ApartmentsForRentNews.com

Tips! You may consider using salvaged materials if you intend to make a larger greenhouse. You may use these materials in designing and planning for a low cost budget greenhouse.

In order to grow plants in a successful manner a temperature that is right for the plants must be maintained throughout the life of them. Specific plants require different temperatures. There are three main types of greenhouse heaters to choose from that can maintain temperatures, especially during winter months.

The best source of artificial heat for the plants and the least harmful to people and the environment can be found through the use of greenhouse heaters that are fueled by electricity. Electric heaters can be the most efficient way of maintaining temperatures that are specific for the plants temperature needs.

The heat given to the plants through these is controlled by a thermostat. By using a thermostat it makes sure that heat is not wasted even if the temperature outside the greenhouse changes. By using the electric types of greenhouse heaters fumes are not produced which can be harmful to the plants grown and the environment as well.

Therefore by using eclectic heaters there is no need for ventilation of the greenhouse. The use of fans for electric greenhouse heaters spreads the heat around the greenhouse. One thing that must be followed is do not use an electic extension from a source such as a home or another outbuilding.

Tips! You also needs to make sure that your greenhouse will be designed with proper air circulation spaces, ventilation, pest control soil, heaters for winter season, and humidity control devices. You should create an environment that is appropriate for the types of plants that will grow in your greenhouse.

Gas heaters are another type you may consider. They are not as productive as electric heaters and there is the production of fumes, in the form of combustion that is released into the atmosphere. A couple of ways in which gas greenhouse heaters differ than electric ones are that the thermostat control is less precise and ventilation is needed in the greenhouse. Also because gas is used it must be monitored and put in a safe place.

A third type to consider which is much less popular than the others is a paraffin heater. One drawback of these greenhouse heaters is the constant maintenance that comes with trimming the wick and the need to refill them constantly. Ventilation is needed in paraffin heaters as they produce fumes and release water vapors into the greenhouse.

One main advantage of paraffin greenhouse heaters is that frost damage to the pants is reduced for greenhouses that are smaller. They can also be used as backups to other types of greenhouse heaters. These heaters can be used if the electricity off or the gas is shut off for whatever reason. This can be important as if the main source of heat is not working it can cause damage to the plants and result in the loss of them.

Tips! You should allot a space where you can store fertilizers, potting soil and other tools that are essential in the greenhouse. You should place a tool rack nearer to the potting place so that it would be easier for you to transfer the soil from the pot of the plants.

If you are unsure about which type is right for you consider talking to a professional at a gardening store. They have all the knowledge that you will need to make an informed decision that will keep your greenhouse in bloom.

Going Down Under With Your House

Posted by admin | House | Friday 23 March 2007 3:23 pm
Read This: Installation, Monitoring, and Repair Services increase not only the level of safety but the convenience of keeping your home safe. A house alarm alone cannot notify the police or fire department in the event of an emergency.

One of the biggest home expenses over time is the cost of energy. Going down under is one way to combat this cost. No, I am not talking about Australia!

Going Down Under With Your House

One of the best ways to save money on utilities it to build a house that takes advantage of the surrounding terrain. One option for really brining this to fruition is to go nearly or completely below grade. Better known as an underground structure, this approach drastically cuts the cost of utilities over the life of the property and gives you an opportunity to build something very creative.

Increase The Curb Appeal Of Any House. 197 simple, low-cost curb appeal and house makeover improvements that anyone can do in a weekend. Free landscape software.

When you go down under with a house, you can have depths from 10 inches to nearly the full height of the house. We are not talking about a house under a lawn. One of the more popular designs for these structures is the atrium layout.

The atrium house is essentially a four sided structure facing an open atrium in the middle. The outer walls of the house are positioned flush to the ground or built up berms. The major living areas all face into the atrium. Windows and glass doors are used to facilitate heating with passive solar energy.

Access to the ground and garages are provided through stairways. By taking this approach, the house has the benefit of being protected from wind, is temperature regulated by the ground in an indirect geothermal gain strategy and has a nice open atrium that can be used for just about anything.

House Building Guide. A step by step guide to building your own home and save thousands of dollars.

The interesting thing about this approach is the appearance above ground. The top of the house is flush or nearly flush with the ground. This provides protection from wind and an escape from noise pollution. The design also provides you with a lot of area to get creative with landscaping. Most people will put in exotic landscaping to take advantage of the situation. Japanese gardens, small forests and so on have been used to striking effect.

One area where you need to be careful with an underground house is drainage. Pumps should be sufficient to remove just about everything, but you need to plan for it at the outset. You don’t want to be sitting in a very expensive pool after that first rain.

Wooden House Signs – Carve Your Own Oak Sign!

Posted by admin | Tips | Thursday 15 March 2007 2:20 am
Home Staging, Fixups & House Makeovers. the who, what and where of home improvement and selling your property fast without spending a fortune.

The aim of this article is to pass on some professional tips and suggestions on making wooden house signs so that, with the aid of visual references such as sign-makers websites (including our own) you will be able to undertake the very satisfying project of carving one in the traditional manner. Even if you don’t need one yourself wooden house signs make a fantastic present for a relation or friend and, though it may be a challenge, you will have something really special to show for the effort.

How To Build Your Free House.

Tools required

* Mallet, chisel and gouges. For the lettering you will need a large V tool and three or four gouges between a quarter and half an inch wide with slightly differing gentle (almost flat) curves. For any carved motif you will in addition need one or two with tighter curves.

* Cramps or holding device of some kind. (for example you can screw a piece of wood to the back of your work and put that in the vice)

* Plane / sander / sandpaper for smoothing the surface and making a chamfer on the edge.

* Bandsaw / jigsaw / coping saw for cutting out curves and regular saw for straight lines.

Choosing the piece of timber

I almost always use oak as it is so durable, attractive and good to carve though anything durable and close-grained is possible, but avoid knots and wavy grain. Depending on your method of cramping the wood, you may need a piece considerably larger than the sign.

Read This: Start with just one letter or number of your house sign, you can do more as your confidence grows. Paint the size onto the surface where you will apply the gold.

Shape of sign and style of lettering

My favourite shapes are oval, rectangular, or a rectangle with a curved top. A hump- backed-bridge shaped top provides a nice visually framed area for a motif or number while the house name goes across the bottom. Ovals often have a motif in the middle but rectangles are often best without. Take a look at some existing signs if you need inspiration. Carving even the simplest letters is not easy so I suggest that you choose a straightforward font such as Roman capitals, or capitals and lower-case for a less formal look.

Getting ready for carving

Use a pencil for the sign layout and take great care – this bit of the job is important. You will find a centre-line useful and measure everything twice! It is usually best to cut the shape of the sign after carving it, using the extra wood to cramp or screw the workpiece firmly and it can also be an area to practice carving before you start the real thing.

Read This: Don’t give your puppy the run of the house until he is thouroughly house trained. Keep him confined in his crate or secluded in an area.

Carving the letters

1 After drawing out all the lettering use the V tool to take out a proportion of the wood staying well within the outline of each letter.

2 “Set down” vertically along the bottom of this V cut using the chisel on straight lines and suitable gouges on the curves.

Building A House Of Worship. 4 Practical steps for praise and worship leader to improve their ministry.

3 Cut the sides of the letters with a sliding movement to finish off (this is the difficult bit!) The direction of cut is very important here or it is like stroking a cat’s fur the wrong way – the point of the tool must not go into the grain but slide on the back of it.

Carving the motif (if any)

Apart from any artistic considerations the technique is still the same; don’t dig into the grain but slide on the back of it. Some people work from a photo or existing sign and you are, of course, welcome to copy any of our motifs. For exterior signs bold is best and round shapes are easiest – don’t try carving holly for example as the points of the leaves are very difficult.

Cutting out and smoothing-up the sign

When you are content with your carving do any smoothing to the surface while it is held firmly and then cut the outside shape of the sign. I suggest you put a chamfer on the edge with a hand-plane chisel or sandpaper.

Painting your sign and fixing it

Read This: Any good how to build a dog house plan should begin by making sure the house is big enough to accommodate your dog’s ultimate grown-up size. You would not like to live in a house whose ceiling was below your head height — neither would your dog.

Dark colours or white are usually most effective if you want to paint the carved letters, and metalwork or enamel paints are what I recommend. If colouring the motif I dilute the paint to let the grain show through. If left untreated and exposed to the weather oak will turn an attractive silver grey (any paint will be unaffected) but if you want to put a finish on your sign then garden furniture oil with UV filters is a good product. If you use screws or other metal fixings make sure they are brass as steel reacts with the tannic acid causing staining.

Good luck! All the effort will be worth it in the end because your house sign, whether professional looking or not, will certainly have great charm.

Copper Use In Your House

Posted by admin | Articles, Daily, Tips | Friday 9 March 2007 5:52 am
House Building Guide. A step by step guide to building your own home and save thousands of dollars.

When thinking of precious metals most of us think of gold and platinum, almost everyone neglects to think of copper, which is, in fact, one of the most basic and common metal we encounter on a daily basis.

This red colored metal has been in use for many years, humanity has found copper and started using it already in Greek ancient times, this use of copper and other metals has evolved since ancient times, and as is the case in copper it has been used for more technological advanced things than the production of mirrors. Copper has a high electrical conductivity, and it reflects and its unique red orange color as it absorbers other frequencies.

Read This: Decide and write down what house cleaning you want done in your home by the house cleaning service you will eventually hire.

Sharing many qualities of its family, copper is very much like silver and gold, all have high thermal and electrical conductivity. Copper is making its comeback for one very strange reason, it is a fact that in the last few years copper theft has been on the rise.

The use of copper has been so wide over the last few years that many have started stealing copper, in any form, to sell afterwards. Today we are dependent of copper, as a relatively cheap metal, for many different uses of everyday modern life and the need for cutting costs and lowering the cost of metals has produced this strange phenomena in which many people find different objects are stolen or stripped from their copper elements.

House Plant Secrets. How to care for any type of house plant. Answers to 1001 Questions.

When you think of using copper in your home, or in your business you should consider the fact that you will need to maintain copper, much more than other metals it is sensitive to corrosion. The many other benefits of copper are that it is relatively cheap and easy to work with, that it has a nice look to it, and that it is, in many cases, a more robust alternative to other kinds of metals or products.

Copper awning for the business is one great solution for an awning needs, although you will need to take care of it a little more than other kinds of awning you will probably agree that it is the most attractive metal you can use.

If you are in the market for copper to use in your home improvement projects, you are probably making a right decision, copper is a great material to work with when you are doing home improvement tasks, and when you need to protect a pipe of an outing of any sorts you will find that copper is one of the most efficient metals you can use, it is not difficult to work with and you require no special expertise for success, you just need to start working with copper and you learn the rest by yourself.

Read This: Make the floor just the littlest bit slanted toward the doorway. Any good ‘how to build a dog house’ plan will make certain that any rain that does enter via the ventilation holes or doorway automatically drains out.

Just one last word about copper, you probably realized half way through reading this that copper does have a very significant role in our lives, from our kitchens with their copper frying pans, pots, knives and forks, to coins and change made part of copper, pipes and awnings and many more products that we have become almost blind to, have copper in them.

Living In Mill Valley, California You Would Love

Posted by admin | Life, Living, News, Reviews, Travel and places | Monday 5 March 2007 2:54 am
Tips! Know your banking information. For your credit card, make sure that the valid dates will remain valid while you’re traveling, know your available spending amount and don’t forget to leave some room on it for emergencies.

If there is a god or goddess of cool towns, he or she started with the creation of places like Mill Valley, California. That is what I thought on December 27, 1977, when first arriving in the state I began in Mill Valley, California.

Travel Industry Secrets.

While residents might now take for granted some of the sensory or other details (though I doubt such proactive, progressive, conscientious folk would) I will walk you through those that struck me and still return to remind me of the starting point of what has been a fine life.

The eucalyptus wafts a mighty moody redolence throughout Mill Valley California, where said trees line the crooked roads – many of which are not city-maintained, but taken care of by the residents on the roads. (One weekend day a year – or more, for example, the neighbors of Manor Drive tote shovels and tar mixtures, meeting to fill in the cavernous pot holes, lesions, and dips of the thin pavement.

Further into town, along East Blithedale, which runs through Mill Valley, California from the highway to the redwoods, more smells emanate from cookeries, eateries, the ever-present flower bodega, and the historic Sequoia Theatre on the slope of the Throckmorton and Blithedale fork.

Natural food shops and groceries but against magic/head shops and chic clothing stores, amidst the great trees and met by the Depot, where a double-doored, terra cotta-floored foyer features a few drinks, a few books, and a few people waiting for the busses that run on the hour or every twenty minutes.

Trees are further celebrities, as around the bend from shopping stops are the great redwoods and other dark and darling flora and fauna of Muir Woods, wherein rests the Mill Valley, California town library, glassed on all sides for a remarkable library visit, interrupted only by the occasional clearing of a throat or the flitting of a bird or butterfly.

Tips! During the flight to Canada or Mexico, you will be asked to fill out a declaration form. This will be collected by the customs officials in that country and from there, you will proceed to your carrier’s ticket booth where you can pick up your travel package that contains your Cuban tourist card.

Less than a mile back through town in the other direction is the infamous Tamalpais High, turning out new dramatists on the tails of such stars as Robin Williams (who lived on the road to Mt. Tam) and Kathleen Quinlin (who turned over the psych film genre with her performance in I Never Promised You a Rose Garden). Also in the area is a longstanding retirement community, called, appropriately, The Redwoods, as well as classic lodging sites that skirt the byway.

Cascoly Software & Travel. Games & world travel.

In addition, if you decide to settle between the culture and temperate Bay Area climate, you will also be in for the best treats: the poetry readings, the Mill Valley Film Festival, and the coolest of artists, performers, philosophers, and stars. You may run into, as I did those many years ago, the jovial Huey Lewis, the stoic Peter Seers, or Celebes of neighboring hamlets visiting not s center attractions but as just another shopper, moviegoer, or tourist.

Tips! Booking Direct. Sometimes travel companies will offer special deals to customers who book directly.

Sean Penn might pop in from San Anselmo/Kentwood; Don Novello might hit the coffee shop, coming from his Marin home where he settled during/after his brilliant stint as Father Guido Sarducci on Saturday Night Live.

And now, as spring returns and the first olfactory sensations of eucalyptus strike me into wonderful, nostalgic recall. As I stop to pick up all the names I just dropped, I will excuse myself – to hop in the car to visit the great place of my indoctrination of Mill Valley California, where you can get your start, too, or get your finish, retiring to the loveliness of warm people, wild woods, and wonderful offerings besides.

Apartment Feng Shui – Do You Know How it Works?

Posted by admin | Apartments, Articles, Cleaning Services, Feng Shui, Tips | Sunday 4 March 2007 4:13 am
Tip: Find out how much the rent is, and all the financial details therein. This is very important for comparing apartments.

In feng shui, all homes are not created equal. This is especially true in apartments. Because apartments can range from free-standing buildings to a complex of individual buildings, this means their feng shui can be vastly different. It also means applying feng shui is also a bit trickier. But, with a few basic steps, you can apply feng shui to your apartment quickly and easily.

Apartment buildings. When you’re living in an apartment building, there are two things to consider: 1) The entrance to the building; and 2) The entrance to the individual apartment. Because these types of apartments are all enclosed in one building, the entrance is very important. In this type of building, the entrance to your apartment building is primary. The entrance to your individual apartment is secondary. Because of this you will want to try to find a building that has an entrance that faces one of your best personal directions according to your kua number. If it doesn’t don’t fret. Just do your best to enhance your apartment as best you can using the lo shu square (see link at the top of the page).

Tip: Use all your resources. Apartments are listed in newspapers, free magazines, small ads, and even ?for rent? signs in the front yard.

Raised Buildings. These kinds of apartments are on stilts and often have parking below. This suggests an unstable footing. Because these apartments are not “grounded” they will not have good feng shui. Try to avoid these apartments.

Penthouses. If you are on the absolute top floor, this means you are vulnerable to attack. Penthouses are generally not deemed auspicious because of that vulnerability. Avoid these apartments as much as possible.

Pool. You should choose an apartment whose pool is on the garden grounds rather than on the roof. Pools on the roof of the hotel are deemed inauspicious because they represent water overhead.

**Windows & Balconies.** If your apartment has a large open veranda or balcony or big picture window, then you will use this as your facing direction, instead of the apartment building’s entrance or the door to your apartment. So take your compass readings from the window versus the door.

Tip: Additionally, when you are visiting the apartment, do not be afraid of scrutinizing every aspect of the apartment. Look for cracks, bugs, dirty spots, and any other flaws.

Apartment Complexes. These apartments are made up of a number of buildings on a property. Each building may have two or more apartments. Generally, the buildings have entrances from the outside, or stairs outdoors. In this case, the determination should be made whether the door or other feature is the facing direction. If there is a large picture window, patio, or veranda, then this will be the facing direction. If not, then the door will be the facing direction.

Tip: Ask about children and pets. Some apartments may not allow children.

Many of these kind of apartment complexes have stairways with open risers. This is troublesome for anyone on any floor other than the first. That’s because it is difficult for chi to rise to the door. If this is the case, try to move to a bottom floor apartment or be sure to keep your light on an place a plant or hanging basket outside the door. This will help raise the chi to your upstairs apartment.

Tip: Visit the apartment. Too many people sign on the dotted line without ever actually seeing the apartment or the neighborhood.

Studio Apartments. If you live in a studio apartment where all the living is done in one room (kitchen, living room, bed, etc.), then this poses an additional problem. If possible, try to demarcate the bedroom by hanging curtains or placing a divider between the bedroom and the rest of the apartment. A bedroom is an important area, and since you have the choice of where to put yours, place the bedroom in the sector that is beneficial for you, and have your head pointed while sleeping in one of your best directions. Again, you choose this by knowing your kua number.

Tip: See what kind of changes you can make to your apartment. Some landlords allow their tenants to paint walls, or change certain appliances or carpeting.

What to look for in Apartments

  • Apartments that are clean, bright, and are not close to garbage or waste receptacles.
  • Apartments that are not too close to a stairway or elevator shaft.
  • Apartments that are not at the end of a long, dark hallway.
  • Apartments whose grounds and entrances are bright, attractive, and well kept.
  • Apartments with regular layouts with no major missing sectors. Ask to see several apartments so that you can determine which apartment will have room placements that is beneficial for you. Be sure to take your compass!

Tip: Ask about service locations around the apartment. Find out things such as, how far it is to the supermarket, the gas station, the bank, restaurants, and public transportation.

How to Build a Green-house?

Posted by admin | Design, Greenhouse, Living, Personal, Tips | Sunday 4 March 2007 3:52 am
Tip! Build a green house room with many indoor and outdoor plants, more the better. Put a comfortable chair to use for reading or relaxing in your home garden.

As with garden sheds, there are two ways to build a greenhouse: you can either buy the sheets of glass and the frame and do it yourself, or you can hire a professional. However, building a greenhouse can be a lot harder than building a garden shed, which is why even experienced DIY enthusiasts might want to think about calling in some professional help.

The main reason greenhouses are difficult to build is the material that they’re made from: glass. If you drop glass or install it wrongly, it will shatter, meaning that any mistakes you make will start to get expensive fast. Would you put in your own windows? If not, you probably shouldn’t be building a greenhouse.

If greenhouses are built incorrectly, not only is it dangerous, but it is unlikely that any of your plants will actually grow properly. Also, it is very difficult to build greenhouses when the sun is shining, as you will get very hot – it’s easier to do it in the winter or the night, but then those are hardly ideal building conditions either.

Tip! The best source of artificial heat for the plants and the least harmful to people and the environment can be found through the use of greenhouse heaters that are fueled by electricity.

It can also be complicated to install the necessary irrigation and air circulation systems that a greenhouse needs to function well, although this is less of a problem in a small greenhouse.

If you are going to hire a professional to either build your greenhouse for you or help you, however, make sure that they have the relevant certification and qualifications. Because glass is such a dangerous material, you should steer clear of anyone who seems confident but inexperienced, and only hire someone who knows what they’re doing, even if it is at a relatively high price. If you’re having trouble finding someone, contact the company that sold you the greenhouse originally, as they should have a list of registered installers in your area.

Tip! In order to grow plants in a successful manner a temperature that is right for the plants must be maintained throughout the life of them.
