Earthquake safety is illusive to some, misrepresented to others, and dispensed well by the many in the know. First, some of us do not live or have not until recently lived in a region where earthquake safety was called for as must-know protocol.

Next, the comics will tell you that many safety points are myths handed down by the misinformed or the authorities without a clue as to how to make you feel at ease…so as they did with the fifties bomb scare advice, when they told students to climb under their desks for protection (from nuclear fallout?), or in the event of a hurricane warning to tape your windows, will tell you to run to and stand in a doorway or what have you.

Ducking into doorways would be reasonable if the earth only always rumbled with very minor tremblings, but an earthquake of the scope of the Loma Prieta (October, 1989, San Francisco), for instance, which took out tons of cement and steel on bridges will not be discouraged from crumbling that house and door jamb right around you, trapping you for keeps.

Windows do not implode during an earthquake, so you will not likely be hit by a hurling shard…though windows do buckle and break and the chances do exist that one could get injured, so staying away from glass is a good idea.

If possible, going outside and away from possibly falling buildings is another good earthquake safety suggestion. And also smart is turning off gas at the main, because gas and other pipes–which are typically underground–do break. Here are a few more earthquake safety tips, for before, during, and/or after:

Earthquake Safety Before An Earthquake

Have back-up medication, eye glasses, non-perishable food, water for at least three days, and a can opener packed in a place you can reach (outside, for instance).

Have extra car and house keys, important papers, and cash and coins set aside in a safe box you can grab easily.

Have medical and other documents copied and put with the above papers, such as birth, immigration, and marriage certificates, etc..

Have a radio that works on battery as well as extra batteries.

Call a service technician to come and anchor any systems or equipment that is not heavy enough to stay put but is heavy enough to do damage or be damaged: telephones, water heaters, gas tanks, oxygen tanks, etc..

Have extra batteries for other important items, such as hearing aids, portable phones, and flashlights (No Candles!). Keep a flashlight by the bed.

Have a phone book, hand-held data keeper, or list of emergency contacts–including police, fire, paramedics, and family and friends.

Earthquake Safety During/After An Earthquake

Try to get outside and away from buildings and powerlines. If you are already outside, move into open space. If you are in a car, stop the car (away from bridges, overpasses, and tunnels, if possible) but stay inside the car. If you are on a beach, get as far inland as possible.

Do not light candles, matches, or lighters of any kind.

Find the gas main and turn off the gas (have someone show you how). The gas company will likely be busy doing the same for others, but if you need to, call the company to have someone come.

Call a friend or family member if you are not hurt. If you are, call the paramedics, police, or fire station…keeping calm as possible, as you will likely get a busy signal or will have a wait (if it is a major emergency in a large area, for example).

Look out for each other. That is, if you are with other people, help each other to stay calm and safe. Earthquake safety is about people, really. Hopefully, you have also devised an earthquake safety plan that includes an agreed-upon meeting place.

If a big one hits and one of you is at the office downtown and another is in class, you can make your way to the park, graveyard, or other mutual open space so you will know all are safe and together.

I’ve wanted to design my own ranch house for years, but was hindered by a lack of architectural knowledge. I’ve been pretty handy since I was little.

My father was always at work out back in his little workshop, and he taught me how to fix and build all manner of household projects so I figured, why should drawing and building ranch house designs be any different.

I’ve never been one to let common sense stand in my way. I thought that ranch house designs would be easier than other houses, because they only take up one story, and so don’t require as much structural support.

I knew the ins and outs of wiring and plumbing, and knew a little bit about post and beam construction, so I figured what the heck, and gut an architectural CAD program to start working out some ranch house designs.

Well, as they say, live and learn. Just learning the program enough to come up with my ranch house designs was practically nightmarish. Architectural CAD programs are used by professional house designers, and ease of use is not the number one consideration which goes into designing them.

Whether you’re designing a ranch house, or just laying out your bathroom, there is much more that goes in to layout than you might imagine.

And then there are safety regulations which you must keep in mind. Legal ranch house designs don’t just incorporate floor plan and roof. You have to learn all about designing and building a foundation, and that is another set of skills altogether.

Then there are fire safety codes, legal load limits, basement design to insure water-tightness. By the time I had come up with a few finished ranch house designs, two years had passed.

I picked my favorite ranch house design, enlisted the weekend aid of a few friends, and got to work. It was like the whole project was doomed. I picked had picked the most ambitious of the ranch house designs, a house plan far beyond my ability.

Because it wasn’t a simple rectangular floor plan, but instead incorporated an internal courtyard, it was hideously difficult to precisely excavate and lay out the basement.

And once this was done, there was an unseen problem – the courtyard entrance was so small, that I couldn’t get heavy equipment needed for house construction through the door. I’m happy to be designing and building my own ranch house, but I’m glad I’ll only have to do it once.

Air conditioning systems are not necessary for all climates and locations. For example, they are very rarely used in San Francisco where I live, because the weather is usually mild. Although it can get very hot for a few weeks in the Summer, it is usually not so bad that the expense of owning, maintaining, and running an air conditioning system is warranted.

The only places where you really need an air conditioning system are in places where it regularly gets into the 90s, or a place where it is slightly cooler, maybe in the 80s, but gets regularly very humid. If you live in Arizona or New Mexico, air conditioning may be a necessity.

This is especially true if you are old or have a serious health condition. In heat waves during the summer, there is often a death toll, because some people simply need to keep cool or else they will die. So, if you are one of them then please, get an air conditioning system.

Air conditioning systems come in several types. There are, of course, the window mounted systems. These have a few advantages, but also a few disadvantages. One advantage is that they are cheap, and can often be found used but in good shape for as low as $40 or even less.

They are also easy to install – just stick them in the window. This means that they don’t need to be attached to a central heating and air conditioning system by a professional, which of course costs much more. The disadvantages of window mounted air conditioning is that it only cools one room.

If you want to cool several rooms, then the cost quickly adds up. Also, they can be dangerous since, if they are improperly mounted, they can fall and injure, or even kill someone!

Another advantage of window mounted systems is that they are easy to maintain. Basically, all you have to do is scrub out the coils from time to time to make sure that mold is not growing in them, and take them in during the winter so that frost does not build up on the coils, if you are in some place where the temperature regularly drops below zero.

But really, the best systems are central air ones because, even though they cost more, and have to be professionally installed and maintained, they cool the whole house at once. Unless you have a very small apartment, this is an obvious advantage.
