I love to take city breaks to New York when I can’t stand the placidity of my life anymore. You see, I live way off in Middle of Nowhere Montana, and work as a cattle rancher, and a writer. The isolation, the fresh air, the physical labor – all are good for my health, and for my writing.

But sometimes, it gets to be too much. There is too much watching the sun rise and set in silence, too much of sitting at the local bar having the same old tired conversations with the same old fellow semi-hermits, and I long for the hustle and bustle of a major urban metropolis. City breaks to New York are the best way to cure these ills.

At home, I live in a simple house, well made of wood, and with high ceilings, but nothing lush or extravagant. I grow my own food, and cook my own meals, and live almost entirely self-sufficiently. On my city breaks to New York, however, I live almost the opposite kind of life. Instead of living simply, I stay in a lavish suite hotel where I can enjoy room service, a spa, exercise equipment, and sauna. I go out to eat every meal I can, and, with my wife (who loves the city every bit as much as I do), I get to live like a king.

At home, besides books there isn’t much for entertainment. There is a little movie theater, playing everything that all the other theaters have forgotten about, and there are occasional halting attempts at community theater. And of course, there is hootenanny night down at the bar. But beside that, there is very little to see and do, and to see a show, you have to drive for over an hour.

But on my city breaks to New York, all Broadway is mine. We go to see Cats, the Phantom of the Opera, and other big productions, as well as smaller ones down in Greenwich Village. There is Central Park, where there are always street performers playing music, and there are the endless joys of people watching.

While my days in Montana are filled with the quiet sound of the wind, my city breaks to New York are filled with nights of steamy jazz, and salsa dancing. Where my sleep in Montana is thick and dreamless, the little sleep I do get on my city breaks to New York is filled with the rumblings of a sleepless city. There is nothing else to put a soul at ease like that.

It’s funny how many friends my father made over the years during his journey as a builder. Many of these friends were more than happy to store his Caterpillar construction equipment on their land. I have to admit that I’m glad that my father couldn’t let go of some things.

My father is a retired construction worker who uses to run his own company. Over the years he has managed to gather quite a few items for building as well as some for demolition. His collection of tools is amazing but his collection of Caterpillar construction equipment is beyond belief.

I actually had no idea how many Caterpillar construction equipment he actually owned until he moved after his retirement. His tools were put up for sale before the move and he was really resistant to let these objects go but he really had no choice. He let most of his collection of tools sell off little by little. His Caterpillar construction equipment is another story.

My father figured that he was probably was not going to need his tools and building materials in the future. He hated to let go of this part of his life but he saw no real need for the items in his well-maintained apartment. He also had no space. Somehow, though he found plenty of space for his Caterpillar construction equipment.

Moving from a large house to a small apartment can be quite challenge. Dad made the move with grace and he even commented on how much easier it is to maintain a living space that is maintenance-free. Giving up his tools and building materials was a big step but giving up his Caterpillar construction equipment was a big step that he was not willing to take. He devised a clever scheme that paid off in the long run.

Though my father was dismayed by the fact that he had to move he did like that he was moving closer to family. Unfortunately, none of his three children owned enough property to house his Caterpillar construction equipment. We all thought that he had gotten rid of the large building machines until I moved into my new house.

We live on a three-acre plot in a rural area. This land is ideal for housing Caterpillar construction equipment. When I approached my father about helping us out with adding an addition to our small house, he gladly accepted the request. I mentioned that it was too bad that he didn’t have his excavator anymore. He mentioned something about being very resourceful.

Girls are not so much of a problem but smaller kids usually are. If that is the case, a favorite cartoon character can be attached to it. Organizing will always attract better response in children if it is done creatively and playfully.

To rid of the clutter, and make organizing the house faster, do not hesitate to discard things that are no longer used. For many that could be hard to follow even when common sense tells them that they should. If it is the same with you, select things that you can discard or donate. Others you can keep in the attic while some remains in your cabinet. After a year that the old things are not yet used throw it out. Because things that ceases to serve a purpose does not have to occupy and clutter the house.

Assign a hamper in the bathroom and the same effect can be duplicated. Tossing dirty laundry on the hamper is just the same as throwing things on the floor.

As the idea is picked, the house gets better organized, and the habit is developed.

Seating can be flexible as well. Choose upholstered dining chairs which mix with your livingroom furniture. Extra chairs can be used in entries and bedrooms. This is where your carefully chosen color scheme will help you. The chair can be used for dining or extra livingroom seating and the color and style will blend.

There are the obvious choices, as well. Sleep sofas are invaluable and come in many sizes and styles. Many are available with air mattresses are really are comfortable. Large storage ottomans can be used as cocktail tables and places to store the bedding for the sleepers as well as extra seating when entertaining. Smaller ottomans can store under sofa tables for a decorative and useful addition.

One of the biggest home expenses over time is the cost of energy. Going down under is one way to combat this cost. No, I am not talking about Australia!

Going Down Under With Your House

One of the best ways to save money on utilities it to build a house that takes advantage of the surrounding terrain. One option for really brining this to fruition is to go nearly or completely below grade. Better known as an underground structure, this approach drastically cuts the cost of utilities over the life of the property and gives you an opportunity to build something very creative.

When you go down under with a house, you can have depths from 10 inches to nearly the full height of the house. We are not talking about a house under a lawn. One of the more popular designs for these structures is the atrium layout.

The atrium house is essentially a four sided structure facing an open atrium in the middle. The outer walls of the house are positioned flush to the ground or built up berms. The major living areas all face into the atrium. Windows and glass doors are used to facilitate heating with passive solar energy.

Access to the ground and garages are provided through stairways. By taking this approach, the house has the benefit of being protected from wind, is temperature regulated by the ground in an indirect geothermal gain strategy and has a nice open atrium that can be used for just about anything.

The interesting thing about this approach is the appearance above ground. The top of the house is flush or nearly flush with the ground. This provides protection from wind and an escape from noise pollution. The design also provides you with a lot of area to get creative with landscaping. Most people will put in exotic landscaping to take advantage of the situation. Japanese gardens, small forests and so on have been used to striking effect.

One area where you need to be careful with an underground house is drainage. Pumps should be sufficient to remove just about everything, but you need to plan for it at the outset. You don’t want to be sitting in a very expensive pool after that first rain.

By getting approved for a loan, you will be placed in a powerful position where you can negotiate. Once you have found the home you want, you will want to make an offer to the agent.
